How Many Google Reviews Does a Local Business Actually Need?

By Patrick M. Arcement · July 23, 2026 · 5 min read

There is no magic number of Google reviews that flips a switch and sends customers your way. But there is a pattern in what customers actually compare before they ever pick up the phone, and it is worth knowing what you are being measured against.

The Comparison Happens Before the Call

Before someone calls your business, they look you up. What they find in that search decides whether you get the call or the company down the road does. That comparison happens in seconds, and four things drive it: your star rating, how many reviews you have, how recent they are, and whether you respond to them.

Star Rating Is the First Thing They See

Your star rating sits right next to your business name in search results, before anyone reads a single word. It is the fastest signal a prospect uses to decide whether to keep looking at you or move to the next listing.

Review Count Matters, But Not Alone

A handful of reviews reads very differently than a hundred, even at the same star rating. Low review count paired with a perfect rating can actually look less trustworthy than a strong rating backed by real volume — a wide base of reviews signals the rating is earned, not lucky.

Recency Says You Are Active

Reviews from last month say you are active and still delivering. Reviews from years ago say something very different, even if they were glowing at the time. A steady, ongoing flow of new reviews matters as much as the total count.

How You Respond Completes the Picture

An owner who replies to reviews — especially the tough ones — looks like an owner who cares. It is often the difference a prospect notices right before deciding to call.

So, What's the Number?

There isn't one fixed target — the honest goal is a rating and volume that beat the two or three competitors a prospect is comparing you against, refreshed often enough to look current, with responses that show someone is paying attention. That is a moving target you compete on, not a finish line you cross once.
